meditation for mind and bodyMeditation is a process of becoming self aware. It is seeing, understanding our deeper nature by becoming conscious of thoughts, emotions. Since what we do day to day is mostly a repetition governed by body and subconscious mind we are not able to get deeper insight into our own nature. Meditation lets us observe cause and effect scenarios by making us aware of thoughts, emotions we act on which produce habits and life pathways eventually. It is a relaxation activity of focusing your energy on the present moment by making your mind, body more restful.

Psychological effects include reduction of stress, higher motivation, reduced depression, more pain tolerance by increasing chemicals in our body such as serotonin, dopamine, endorphin. Other numerous benefits include improved neurochemistry, increased hormonal and neurotransmitter levels, alignment of acupuncture meridians for coherent bio photon( electromagnetic signal) flow within the body.

What is guided meditation & its benefits?

guided meditation

Guided meditation has the same benefits just as doing meditation on your own if properly. There is an advantage of having a more experienced person guide you through the process but also a disadvantage of interruption within your practice. Proper guided meditation presents a subject to a process by pointing out necessary steps to follow. It is important to understand that deeper states of meditation can only be achieved by your own doing and nobody can accomplish it for you. Any tips, instructions should serve as building blocks in bettering your practice. There are different types of guided meditation but one we are more comfortable with is up for us to choose. You can join meditation classes to learn meditation in appropriate way.

How long to meditate for benefits?

Deep meditation can be achieved within 30 minutes with some practice. Since our brain waves tend to slow down by the end of meditation session it is recommended to sit longer to contemplate on conscious states if reached. We might be able to shift from beta to alpha brain wave within a shorter time frame than 30 minutes but effects will not be nearly as beneficial as in longer meditation. Main goal is being in a state beyond time and space, something that counting time contradicts. Therefore non interrupting meditation processes where you lose sense of time, space is a thin transition to that necessary shift of consciousness.

How long to meditate daily for benefits?

It is recommended to meditate in the mornings or evenings for best results. Meditating more often within a day will also improve your benefits.

How long to see the benefits of meditation?

Just like physical exercising, you can observe results by becoming more effective at your practice. You will observe a shift in your responses immediately after proper meditations. By gaining more self awareness of your thoughts, emotions you will notice changes in your daily behavior. It will also elevate your response to other people’s behaviors and outside sources that we can not control. Meditation is becoming one with the present moment, space, something that many people can not achieve because they are diverted by the future, past, somewhere else. Your anxiety, fear will be diminished by conscious focus on the present moment.

What are different types of meditation

Basic/Mindfulness meditation

basic meditationIf you are new to yoga or meditation, it is a basic technique to practice yourself. This is a good way to initiate yourself before you engage in other forms of meditation. Beginners should focus on their breathing, learn to be aware of their senses by observing breath. You can do it by closing your eyes and breathing naturally. Then focus on the ins and outs of your breath, be aware of the rise and fall of your chest, air coming in and going out of the nostrils, energy traveling through different parts of your body like palms, spine, heart, head. If your thoughts start arising, return your mind gently back to your breath and refocus attention back to breathing or energy traveling through the body as mentioned. Start by doing this for a few minutes every day and then gradually increase the time.

Mantra/Transcendental meditation

mantra meditationMantras are a form of sound meditation. Mantra is a sacred word that yogis believe produces physical, psychological, and spiritual benefits to the person who says them. Mantras have no meanings but repeating them can create vibrations that can put your brain in tune with the waves of the universe.

Mantras are commonly used in Buddhism, Hinduism. The most basic single-syllable mantra is “Om” but there are dozens of mantras that can be used while meditating. Mantras have rhythm and sometimes melody that can create energy vibration reflections on our bodies. Those who chant them find the sound cultivates inner peace, yet an alert state of mind. It also fosters positive qualities like forgiveness, compassion, and acceptance. Gratitude is again recommended in any meditation as a high frequency emotion to build upon. First, choose a mantra that you would chant, then do a basic meditation technique as mentioned previously above to ready your mind for mantra meditation. Transcendental meditation instructors offer specific mantras to their students.

Chakra/Kundalini/Kriya meditations

chakra meditationThe first two types of meditation primarily focus on chakras as energy centers in our body for balancing energy flow. While Kriya is mostly focused on breathing and directing energy up through our spine area. There are seven basic chakras located at seven different parts of the body:

  • The root chakra, located in your tailbone directs survival and grounding
  • The sacral chakra, located in the navel, directing passion
  • The solar plexus chakra, directing confidence and willpower
  • The heart chakra, located in the chest, directing compassion and love
  • The throat chakra, located in the throat, directing communication and expression;
  • The third eye chakra, located in the forehead directing intuition, image
  • The crown chakra, situated above the head, directing wisdom, thought, connection to consciousness.

These chakras are the energy centers through which the life force flows. If these chakras become blocked, they can result in psychological, physical problems. However we can meditate to open up our chakras. Chakra meditation seeks to balance, align, and harmonize these chakras.

Here’s how you can do chakra meditation. Breathe evenly and close your eyes. Do the same mindful meditation as mentioned above to prepare. Start focusing on chakras by directing attention starting from base/root center. Concentrate on your root chakra at base by imagining a wheel of energy. As you focus attention their energy will start building up in a wheel or spiral shape after which you can gradually move it up into higher chakras. Then go to your sacral chakra and visualize a wheel of orange energy then work your way up to the crown chakra. All chakras are associated with different colors and sounds. Details of which may be looked up in many etheric related articles online. Whatever chakra you want to open, consciously focus energy spiraling there. It is recommended to start from the bottom chakra for optimal energy flow. Once you have sufficient energy flow you can direct energy flow to specific chakras to empower them.
